Actually, They Hated Each Other

March 13, 2008

From NPR:

“A Pentagon-sponsored study of 600,000 Iraqi documents captured after the 2003 invasion shows that no direct operation link existed between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden’s terrorist network.

The Bush administration claimed such a relationship to support its arguments for invading Iraq, though the U.S. intelligence community had conflicting evidence on the issue.

The study of the documents reportedly was completed last year by a federally funded think tank, the Institute for Defense Analyses.”

Is There anyone who reads/contributes (to) this blog that still thinks there was a viable Hussein-Bin Laden nexus? If so, please raise your hand. Thanks.

I think the really interesting question is why did the Bush administration argue that there was a nexus?

    a) They really thought there was a nexus, based on some “gut feeling,” in spite of the contrary evidence.

    b) They thought there was a nexus because of severely cherry-picked intelligence.

    c) They knew there wasn’t, but also knew that a terrorist connection would be a compelling reason to support their war.

You can just about find “evidence” for anything. Letters C = A + B.

Those who got the whole “let’s invade Iraq!” ball rolling post 9/11 had been saying, “let’s invade Iraq!” since the mid-90s, for reasons quite unrelated to terrorism. So I’m guessing it’s (C) here.
