Bong Hits 4 Jesus

June 25, 2007

Although I probably wouldn’t participate in this particular event, I am furious with how the Supreme Court just ruled about it.

Five years ago, a high school student in Alaska, Joseph Frederick, displayed a 14-foot sign on the sidewalk across from his school. The sign read “Bong Hits 4 Jesus.” Frederick was suspended from school for this sign, and he sued the school claiming that his first amendment rights had been trampled on. The school argued that Frederick was part of a school-sanctioned event, because students were let out of classes and accompanied by their teachers. Since he was participating in a school-sanctioned event, they argued, he was under the jurisdiction of the school and its more restricting abilities of students’ first amendment rights.

Who knows why he made this sign or what it means. That really doesn’t matter so much in this case. I find it disturbing how much schools want to take away the rights of students. Censorship is not nearly as effective as an open forum with open dialogue.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the school district. Coincidentally, the lead attorney representing the school district was Kenneth Starr. I knew I hated that guy.

Next thing they’ll do is overturn Johnson v. Texas. The Roberts court is already off to a very bad start as far as our rights go.

I had a dream that Obama was elected and several of the current justices died so he got to appoint like 5 new ones. It was a fantastic dream.
